Frequently Asked Question
Common Reasons Your Computer Shows “Connected without Internet” and how to go about it.
1. The router has no internet
Your computer is connected to the router, but the router itself cannot reach your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
2. IP configuration issue
It is possible that you device has been assigned an IP address from a device that is unable to route you to the Internet or the IP lease has expired.
3. DNS issues
If DNS stops working, you’re technically connected, but websites won’t load.
4. Authentication issue for cases of eduroam wi-fi
Your device might show connected without Internet due to wi-fi authentication issues.
Resolution steps to take;
Restart your devices: Unplug your router, wait for about a minute, then plug them back in. Restart your computer as well.
Check other devices: If other devices also can't connect to the internet, the problem is likely with your router or ISP. Check for an outage in your area.
Check IP settings: Verify whether whether the IP you are being assigned matches that provisioned by RENU. If there could be another device within your LAN that is providing IPs and this could be causing an IP conflict and the devices that pick the unrouted subnet are unable to get service.
Verify wi-fi credentials: Please contact the IT admin at your institution to verify your eduroam credentials. In case you are unable to reach them immediately, kindly contact the RENU NOC for assistance.
Run the network troubleshooter: On Windows, right-click the network icon and select "Troubleshoot problems" to let the operating system try to diagnose and fix the issue.
Forget and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network: Remove the network from your computer's saved networks and then connect again, re-entering the password if necessary.
Update network drivers: Check for and install any available updates for your network adapter drivers.
Change DNS settings: Try switching to a public DNS server, such as Google's DNS, to rule out a DNS problem.
